I should also pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming.
I really like the stipulation that a bill that previously failed cannot be reintroduced without extensive reworking. It is so tiresome to spend time fighting a bad bill, only to have it reappear because certain legislators don’t want to take NO for an answer. Under HR18, The school voucher/tax credit and Medicaid expansion bills would have been DOA.
I’m going to follow this bill closely. It will make a lot of activists very happy if/when it passes.
Every move DOGE makes just proves how incredibly incompetent they are - just like trump.
Here’s my take on the situation:
First, trump is a moron. Everyone in NY knows that fact from way back when, at the start of his “career”. Daddy’s money paid for his everything in life and stunted him intellectually, emotionally and morally. After his fictitious portrayal as a successful businessman on “The Apprentice”, his swelled head led him into politics.
Through “business” dealings in Russia, the much sharper Putin quickly learned how to manipulate trump - with lots of money and (fake) admiration. Putin’s interference in the 2016 election got trump installed as president. We all know how that went. Fast forward to 2024. With continued Russian interference plus musk’s huge cash infusion and social media propaganda, trump “wins” again.
The situation now is like a dream come true for these criminals. trump opens the door for Putin to continue western expansion/democracy destruction, musk gets $38 billion in US government contracts plus gets to chainsaw his way through our democracy (which he also despises) and gets to own the White House. And trump? He’s a lazy old man who doesn’t give a rat’s ass about what happens to anyone but himself. He gets to make a fortune selling influence, grifting his idiot followers, and playing god with decent Americans’ lives.
All while spending most of his time cheating at golf on one of his courses - at taxpayer expense.
While the design of the DOGE model incorporated restraint, accountability, and cost-conscious leadership, in practice, it’s just as Musk showed us with his dance at the CPAC gathering holding a chainsaw above his head.
Beginning in the George W. Bush administration, I was responsible as primary author for a federal agency’s performance and accountability report. Part of that responsibility was to work with a team to develop corrective action plans for large programs that had not fully succeeded in an evaluation through the Program Assessment Rating Tool (PART). If a program did not meet certain criteria, the department could decide to cut the funding or perhaps even increase funding if the assessment identified that as needed to produce the required effectiveness and efficiencies. Many people did not like this approach but at least it put a lot of people‘s eyes on a program’s budget, outcomes, successes and failures…UNLIKE WHAT MUSK IS DOING WITH HIS SLASH AND BURN.
Americans are losing so much value that they have invested in through their tax dollars the way this is being handled.
Great read! Great resolution from Rep. Fuhriman. I only wish it could move forward this year. Some legislators this session have 70 bills they had printed! The costs to the State are real!
As a resolution how effective is it at actually restricting number of bills spewed by “lawmakers”. It’s ironic that our legislators actual responsibility is the budget which they fail to thoroughly review and properly appropriate each legislative session.
I love the purpose of HR18. I HATE that you chose to use that acronym DOGE in the headline because it tends to make intelligent people think the article is about some unconstitutional joke if an idea originating with Elon and the Muskrats. Why would you use that in a headline about such a great idea as HR18?
The proposed Idaho House Bill 364, commonly referred to as the “DOGE” bill, aims to establish the Department of Government Efficiency Legislative Task Force. This nine-member task force would be responsible for identifying and recommending the elimination of wasteful or redundant government services, programs, and expenditures, with the goal of streamlining operations and enhancing fiscal responsibility and transparency.
Supporters of the bill, such as Republican State Representative Lance Clow, argue that it’s prudent for the legislature to periodically review government operations to identify inefficiencies. Clow noted that the legislative body’s limited time during sessions often focuses on actual spending rather than evaluating how funds are utilized.
However, the bill has faced criticism from various quarters. House Minority Leader Ilana Rubel contends that the legislature already possesses oversight mechanisms for state agencies and questions the necessity of creating an additional task force. She expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of a small group, meeting infrequently, in comprehensively assessing multiple agencies’ operations.
Further concerns arise from the bill’s inspiration—the federal Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an unofficial advisory body created by former President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. This federal entity has been scrutinized for operating without transparency or official oversight, leading to lawsuits over mass firings and funding freezes.
Given these factors, skepticism toward the proposed legislation is understandable. The potential redundancy of the task force, coupled with concerns about transparency and effectiveness, warrants a cautious approach. Ensuring that any measures to improve government efficiency do not inadvertently expand bureaucracy or diminish oversight is crucial. It’s essential to critically assess whether such initiatives genuinely serve the public interest or primarily advance partisan agendas.
I have been and my Father Before ( pased in 2001) a Republican, of the Eisenhower, Reagan, John McCain, Liz Cheney Brand. I Do not see that in what they call the GOP (Republican) in "IDAHO" State or Federal, I see TRUMPLICAN, TRUMPISM and this Bill will be KILLED BY FAR RIGHT OLIGARCHY $$$ MONEY $$$, in my Opinon. Time Will tell, Yet GOOD IDEAS are NOT IN TRUMPS ERA, It is a DO AS YOUR TOLD AUTHORITARIAN/ OLIGARCHY REALITY, and it is only Growing into WORSE !
I want to shake Ben Fuhriman’s hand!

Just like always…

Excellent, well thought out.

Wow. HR18 would be great! Hopefully enough legislators will see the sense in this resolution and pass it.
