The paradigm has shifted. What was once the Republican party has been hijacked. There's an editorial by David Brooks in the NYT today about how the populist/isolationist and, might I add authoritarian, faction of the Repubican party has replaced the internationalist/free trade party. It is something of a revolution and the only counter to it is likely to be some group that can come up with some new trajectory that answers, in some measure, the biggest questions and fears of the population. Also a person who can deliver a new unifying message who hopefully isn't a demagogue.

I don’t think the extremists are interested in unifying with the legacy Republicans that they have viciously disparaged.
