Thank you Jim. You are so right. Too many of us take our democracy for granted by believing that democracy is easily maintained. It is not. Rather than being a strong, permanent fortress, our democracy is a living, fluid idea, maintained by our careful and constant guardianship. Sadly, over the last few decades, we neglected our responsibility and now, we are moving ever closer to losing it for good.

But we still have time to reclaim the democracy our founders envisioned for us. We just need to relearn how to be better guardians. The time is now. Let’s roll.

The need to celebrate our constitution and democracy this July 4th has never been more urgent. In addition to picnics, fireworks, parades and concerts in the park, we must take time to think about what’s happening to our country and heed Ben Franklin’s words - “ if we can keep it”.
